Cleaning and Sanitising Mattresses—How to Sleep Better

Do you struggle with restless sleep? If you find yourself sneezing or feeling irritated while in the safe haven of your own bed, even though you know that you don’t have allergies, not cleaning your mattress might be to blame.

The mattress you sleep on every night can be the home of up to 10 million unwanted guests, like dust mites. These pests feed on human skin; therefore, your bed is the perfect place for them to thrive. Not to get too graphic, but the dead bodies of these pests, mixed with their excrement, are torture for people who suffer from allergies.

Some health problems resulting from not cleaning your mattress can manifest themselves as having itchy, red eyes, rashes on your skin, coughing, sneezing, general difficult breathing, and even some digestive problems. So what can you do about this?

When should you consider cleaning your mattress?

Even if you can’t actually see the dirt accumulating on your mattress, you should still consider sanitising it regularly. It’s a good idea to clean them every six months. However, you can do it sooner if you’re not resting properly or if you want to freshen up your bedroom.

However, if you’re buying an already used mattress, you should consider properly sanitising it before you start using it in your bedroom. Sadly, it’s not uncommon for people to sell mattresses without realising that entire families of bed bugs and dust mites lie beneath the covers. Avoid infesting your own home, do your checks first.

Best Solutions for Cleaning Your Mattress

Steam cleaning

This is the most natural method for cleaning your mattress and perhaps the most simple one. You need a handheld steamer, like the one you use for your clothes. Just use short, sharp bursts of steam, and you’ll clean up any stains and eliminate the unwanted dust mites. If you don’t fancy investing in a steam cleaner, you can usually rent one out from your local dry cleaner.

Use antibacterial spray

Of course, an antibacterial spray will help you kill any germs inhabiting your mattress, by now the word “antibacterial” should probably feel familiar. However, you need to make sure that your product doesn’t contain bleach, because it could damage the fibres of the mattress. All you have to do is gently spray the surface of your mattress and use a damp cloth to wipe it off.

You deserve a good martini after you finish cleaning up your mattress. However, you can use vodka as a cleaning product as well, not only as a beverage. Pour some vodka into a spray bottle and mist some over the surface of your mattress. It will work in a similar way with the antibacterial spray.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you’ve been here from the beginning, you would know we are big fans of baking soda and vinegar. If you’d rather use products that you already have around your house, baking soda and vinegar are the perfect choice. Pour some vinegar in a spray bottle, lightly mist the surface of the mattress and, after 10 minutes, add some baking soda and let it sit for a while. Afterwards, simply vacuum your mattress and you’re done.

Shaving Cream Foam

This might sound surprising, but most shaving creams contain alcohol, therefore they can easily be used as a cleaning product. If you have a stain on your mattress, just put some shaving cream on it and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse afterwards with a mixture of water and vinegar, and the stain will be gone.

If you’re wondering if it’s time to clean your mattress again, you can use a dust mite and allergen test kit to see where you stand. Sometimes, a 6 months period is too much and you need to sanitise it sooner.

Also, it a good idea to keep your bedroom clean as well because dust can accumulate on many other surfaces and damage the quality of your sleep. A clean bedroom means a restful sleep.
